One of the most rewarding aspects of parenting is bonding with your child, and exposing them to various activities to stimulate their interests.

Soccer, baseball or piano can often serve as the parental favorites, and many times for good reason. I personally enjoyed watching classic martial arts movies with my younger son who later talked me into buying him a samurai sword and dressing as a father-son ninja team for Halloween. He is now fourteen and doesn’t think Dads are cool at all, so I cherish those memories, and hope he will as well.

TheresaThank You: We want to say a special THANK YOU to all of our volunteers, runners, participants, and sponsors for another successful Theresa Lang Memorial 5k event on August 8, 2015!

Why We Run: Theresa Lang first joined TM Martial Arts in 2006. She participated in Self-Defense courses, Fitness Kickboxing, and eventually enrolled in our Martial Arts program where she studied Combat Hapkido and TaeKwonDo. But Theresa became most passionate about or JLFS Kickboxing program, where she attained her first degree black belt in November, 2011. Theresa was a well-respected student and friend at TM Martial Arts who positively touched every life she met. She was also an extremely skilled massage therapist who founded the growing TMMA Ultimate Spa. TM Martial Arts lost a dear friend with her passing in December of 2011. She is remembered most for her fighting spirit and her winning smile. TM Martial Arts honored her memory by offering all net proceeds of this year’s race to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. Read More

Better Grades? Yes Please!

TMMartialArtz

How Martial Arts Can Improve Academic Performance

A new school year is rolling in, and that means notebooks, pencils, and brand new backpacks! How can you help your child get better grades this year in school? One way is to enroll him/her in martial arts!

According to the Journal of Pediatrics, exercise such as martial arts positively impacts children and adolescents’ academic performance. The University of Madrid conducted a three-year study, which included 2,038 individuals aged 6 to 18. They concluded that as physical fitness improves the individuals’ health, it also positively affects the brain. This study further indicated that exercise can enhance a student’s ability to perform well in school. That means better grades!

Physical exercise improves academic performance

Researchers found that motor ability, cardio-respiratory capacity and muscular strength all play a role in benefiting students’ academic performance. In fact, motor ability is strongly associated with academic development. TIME magazine indicated intellectual programs, coupled with physical exercise, can play a major role in impacting students’ success in school.

Martial arts can help students achieve better grades

Given this study, it’s crucial for young individuals to engage in physical fitness! Martial arts includes both aerobic exercise and motor tasks, which is an ideal exercise for children and adolescents. As children participate in martial arts classes, they have a better chance of reaching their academic potential.

Now is the perfect time to enroll! CLICK HERE for more information about classes at TM Martial Arts!

Kickin_Newsletter_BannerMartial Arts Will Develop Your Focus

Focus is a skill just like any other, such as writing your name or solving arithmetic problems. Focus is a set of behaviors that you can improve with the right coaching and motivation. As a martial arts student, you’re able to participate in a process that will develop your focus.

The biggest misunderstanding about focus is that it’s a “natural” skill, much like athletic or musical skills. The mistaken thinking is that if you weren’t born with it, you will never be a focused person. Martial arts students around the work have proven that to be a false assumption. The ability to focus in your academic and martial arts classrooms, on your homework, chores and martial arts practice can be developed. In other words, you can progress from poor focus to excellent focus skills. Read More

Where Can Kids Learn Anti-Abduction Techniques?

“Most potential abductors grab their victims on the street or try to lure them into their vehicles.” ~National Crime Information Center

At Kids Self-Defense Camp, children learn effective Anti-Abduction techniques, including how to avoid being pushed into a vehicle! Most predators look for an easy target. Let’s Talk About Memory!

SmartKid-iStock_000023271287XSmall

Let’s Talk About Memory

Memory is a valuable skill that Little Ninjas develop at TM Martial Arts. As children regularly participate in our Little Ninja program, they begin to retain techniques and lessons. They remember the important things we teach them, which in turn helps them remember the important things YOU teach them. This will help them make smart decisions. Remembering their martial arts techniques will also prepare them to eventually enter into our TaeKwonDo program, which is built upon memorizing different forms and kick/punch combinations. Read More

Kickin_Newsletter_BannerWhy Martial Artists Don’t Find Themselves in Trouble

All martial arts have two important features: self-defense and character-building. Anyone can fight if he or she is angry enough. But to use their body effectively as a weapon takes training and time.

Correct martial arts training prepares the mind and body to respond to unexpected situations. A good martial artist tends to be as much an expert at avoiding confrontations as dealing with them. Most martial artists are not looking for a fight, nor do they adopt habits that make them easy targets. It’s a bit like the “predator” effect. In nature, most predatory animals do not hunt other predators. It is not safe or easy. Human criminals and violence-prone individuals realize that other predators are not easy pickings, so they seek easier targets (most of the time). Read More

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Kierra Ruiz is a student in our Combat Hapkido program. She has worked her way up to earning her Orange belt. Outside the studio, Kierra is just as impressive! This past month, she graduated from Plainfield Central High School with a 5.0 GPA! Kierra has many accomplishments under her belt. She participated in Cross Country, Track, Marching Band, and Wind Ensemble, which is her school’s most elite band. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Wildcat Athletic Leadership Club, and she was named winner of this year’s Student Council Scholarship! Kierra plans to attend the University of St. Francis in the fall to study nursing.

We caught up with Kierra this week to talk about her amazing accomplishments. She told us how martial arts training has helped her succeed in life. “It took me out of my comfort zone and taught me people skills, confidence, how to try something new, and how to show respect.” Kierra plans to continue training at TM Martial Arts, even while she attends college. Her advice to other students: “Don’t give up, even when it’s hard! Work hard and listen to your instructors. They know best.” Congratulations on your amazing accomplishments, Kierra!

Martial Arts Promotes Improved behavior after just one class!

TM Martial Arts prides itself on providing quality martial arts classes to students 3 1/2 years and up. Often times, parents discover improved behavior in their children after just one class! That’s because every class is taught by experienced instructors, follows a unique class structure, and focuses on key components found within the curriculum.

By the end of the very first class, students have learned to respect their environment by properly stowing their shoes and coats, to respectfully address their elders as “Sir” or “Ma’am,” and have been exposed to our 10 Student Home Rules, which include statements such as “I will be truthful at all times,” and “I will not interrupt an adult conversation.”

These Two Students Caught In The Act

school_bus_driver

What the bus driver did next…

Last fall, two students boarded their school bus as usual and moments later were dropped off near their homes. Upon exiting the bus, they gave each other a high five and said, “See you later at TM Martial Arts!” They had no idea that the bus driver had overheard their exchange.

That evening, the bus driver, named Dena, felt compelled to call TM Martial Arts and fill us in on the boys’ typical behavior. She explained that both of these students have shown exceptional behavior on her bus throughout the year. They showed great respect and would greet her everyday with, “Hello ma’am.” She said she had not been surprised when she overheard them mention TM Martial Arts. She wanted to let us know what a solid program we have!

IMG_4973_2

TaeKwonDo students practice their form

After martial arts class that evening, the two boys were called to the front of class and praised for their outstanding behavior. They truly have set a great example for the rest of our martial arts students. But respect and discipline are expected out of all TM Martial Arts students.

Studies show that training in martial arts improves behavior in kids. The curriculum at TM Martial Arts is designed to instill respect and discipline while also honing character skills. All of these skills serve students well as they grow and advance in life.

We, at TM Martial Arts, applaud all of our students for their outstanding behavior. We wholeheartedly believe that martial arts improves behavior in students of every age!

How Does Karate Help Kids With ADHD?

ADHD

“In addition to giving kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, all of the physical benefits of exercise, including improved cardiovascular health and better strength and flexibility, karate might also lessen ADHD symptoms, such as impulsiveness and hyperactivity. It can also provide positive role models for children with ADHD and provide opportunities for peer interaction…”

Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center

Ms. Karis and Commander Cao

Ms. Karis visits the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, FL

In February, Ms. Karis had the opportunity to join other martial artists in a tour of the Naval Diving & Salvage Training Center in Florida, which is the largest diving facility in the world! What made this tour extra special? It was led by Commanding Officer, Hung Cao!

Did you know that Commander Cao studied martial arts as a child? He says martial arts gave him the discipline and perseverance he needed to accomplish great things! Commander Cao has an amazing life story which you can get a glimpse of in his bio on the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center website.

3000 Yard Swim

3000 Yard Swim

During the tour of the Naval Diving & Salvage Training Center, Ms. Karis couldn’t help but notice the extreme respect and attention that all of the students displayed when Commander Cao entered the room. Why did they show him extra respect? It’s because he holds a high rank in the military. He is their superior. As their Commanding Officer, he is in charge of their education and training, their safety, and their promotion to higher ranks. Everyday, he makes decisions that potentially save their lives. A rank like that deserves utmost respect!

Hall of Honor

Hall of Honor

Why do students bow to their instructors in class?

We bow to show respect!

Your instructors hold a higher rank than you. They have trained for many years and overcome obstacles to achieve their rank. As your superiors, they are in charge of your education and training, your safety, and your promotion to higher ranks. A position like that also deserves utmost respect!

As you know, your instructors also bow to YOU! That is their way of showing respect to you too. One of the things that make martial arts great is the level of respect among students and instructors. Without these traditions, martial arts becomes just a sport. But with these traditions, martial arts becomes a way of life!
