While Combat Hapkido and Jujitsu are both martial arts, there are many similarities and differences between the styles.
Both disciplines have self-defense applications, but they vary in purpose and style. Combat Hapkido was developed in the U.S. It is a modern update on Korean Hapkido, with a stronger emphasis on self-defense. It focuses on a variety of strikes, kicks, joint locks, pressure points, ground survival and disarming techniques. It is a practical self-defense style that remains usable in a variety of real-life situations.
Jiu-jitsu originated in Japan, while a variation on the original discipline was developed in Brazil. It is mainly a grappling art and was originally developed to disarm an assailant.
The Difference in Techniques
Combat Hapkido focuses on gaining control of an opponent through non-resisting movements and force redirection. There’s an emphasis placed on footwork, distractive striking and body positioning.
The Japanese version of Jiu-jitsu focuses on strikes, but also incorporates more throws and groundwork. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became more popularized in recent years with Mixed Martial Arts and UFC fighting.
Combat Hapkido Vs. Jiu-Jitsu: Self-Defense Applications
While there are Jujitsu techniques that come in handy for self-defense, it is more of a refereed sport than Combat Hapkido. The latter was built and designed purely as a system for self-defense.
Combat Hapkido offers a variety of self-defense moves from the standing, strong position. This is useful because a large percentage of attacks originate with both people on their feet. While there are grappling moves involved, the goal with Combat Hapkido is to get up and out of your assailant’s control, and back to the standing position.
There is no universal answer to “What is the best martial art for me to study?”. Base the decision on your long-term goals and aspirations. Are you looking to compete or is your training more of a personal journey? Are you focused more on self-defense or striking?
